CSA Newsletter Week 10/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 10/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

It’s certainly been busy out here lately, with all the momentum of spring quickly marching us forward. In just three short weeks, we’ll be joined by a shiny new cohort of interns and just like that, we’re off and running! It’s an exciting time of year, when potential energy is high and the opportunity of another season seems to offer unlimited inspiration, despite the finish line just recently behind us. What can I say - farming just never seems to get old. Here’s hoping this week brings plenty of rain, and the rest we all need to keep moving. Happy eating!

This week we’ve decided to give you the gift of dandelion greens. They’re a bitter green and can be used and prepared similarly to escarole or radicchio. Not a lover of deliciously bitter vegetables? Never fear! Cooking the greens tempers the bite. As an added bonus, they’re extremely nutritious - check out this article from Bon Appetit for more details.

CSA Newsletter Week 9/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 9/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

All this sunny weather means a busy week mowing and preparing field space, raising caterpillar tunnels (hopefully!), and preparing for the first plantings of the season. Executing these tasks is all about timing - working with the ebb and flow of ephemeral spring weather to get plants in the ground as early as possible. The sooner we’re able to get planting, the sooner we’ll be back to harvesting produce from our own fields to share with all of you. Up first are spring onions, and our very first round of tomatoes, a reminder that summer with all of its energy and momentum is closer than it may seem. Enjoy your boxes this week, and wish us luck!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 8/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

On Thursday, a small-but-mighty crew of six began raising the arches on our brand new greenhouse. The outcome of this larger-than-life task, a giant metal ribcage set against the sky, is the first of many steps in transitioning the bulk of the farm operation to our Birchville farm site. When completed, the new greenhouse will allow us to comfortably house far more baby plants than our current space, which we outgrew long ago. More of a mansion than a ‘house’, really, and an exciting sign of the times. Our partnership with the ‘Forever Farms’ program has truly revolutionized the future of growing food at Mountain Bounty, and we are ever-grateful for it. There’ll be lots of big changes up ahead for us this spring, and we’re excited for the opportunity to improve, expand, and grow more amazing vegetables than ever - a bright future to look forward to during this beautiful, sunny week!

CSA Newsletter Week 7/52 - February 17/18

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 7/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

My question for you all this week; does everyone really still dislike fennel? Before moving here to farm in 2017, my only understanding of fennel was that it was a vegetable that I did not buy, and therefore a vegetable that I certainly would not grow. I’d eaten it a grand total of... one time (I know, shocking), in an italian wedding soup lovingly crafted by a fennel-savvy companion. Hindsight 20/20, I just didn’t realize exactly what I was missing out on.

Growing the diversity of vegetables that we do for a CSA of this scale means that there’s a place for almost everything, novelty and staple alike, all in their own time. Fennel, to my knowledge, has mostly fallen into the category of ‘novelty item’. Over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback that folks either don’t like it or just don’t  know what to do with it. So we play it cool and tone it down, sneaking it in every once in a while, alternating between boxes, hoping to gradually indoctrinate hordes of unsuspecting CSA members one season at a time. A couple years ago, we even grew fennel for Sierra Harvest’s “Harvest of the Month” program.  Mountain Bounty fennel was distributed to classrooms across the county for students to taste, which we all thought felt like Real Progress.

So is it working? Are all of you finding a way to let fennel into your hearts? Personally, I love fennel, and I don’t really get all the hype. There’s the licorice-y flavor, but it’s mild and sweet, and honestly, part of the draw. It’s versatile, and you can eat it raw, roasted, caramelized, even pickled. It keeps well in the fridge, so you can go ahead and ignore it for a little if you want- so forgiving! And it’s a champion in the field, an ‘umbelliferae’, not much of a rabble-rouser, eventually producing an umbrella-shaped inflorescence that beneficial bugs and pollinators love.

Do you love fennel? Want to see more of it in your boxes? Let us know! And if not, don’t sweat it. We’re happy to be your official fennel support system.

Your boxes this week are making their way to you packed with loads of amazing winter vegetables, and even a little bit of fennel (regular box only, but don’t worry small box-ers, you’ll get your chance!). We hope you’re all enjoying the good-ness this season has to offer, soaking up rainy days, and keeping your bellies full. See you next week!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 6/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed this past week of glorious, sunny days. In greenhouse and field, all of the growing things - tiny seedlings, cover crop, some very cute tomato plants, etc. - have been savoring the extra light and warmth just as much as the rest of us. With rain on the way this week, we’ll be back to our regular February programming, and grateful for it. There are so many bodies of water out there that need filling right now, mountains in need of snow pack, and a whole lot of frogs that need something to sing about. Enjoy your boxes this week, and cross your fingers that when it rains, it pours!

CSA Newsletter Week 5/52 (February 3/4)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 5/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

At the bottom of February, spring and summer and their notoriously glamorous produce can seem miles away. We dutifully roast our carrots and rutabagas, all the while yearning for the snap of a cucumber, sweet corn, or a melon, freshly balled. It's okay! Even the best of us occasionally succumb to winter vegetable fatigue. Still, the produce you'll find in your boxes shines in a light all its own. Carrots are at their sweetest from chilly nights and cold storage. Mustard, mizuna, arugula, and kale are mild and sweet from cold and rain. Winter specialties that we're unlikely to see at other times finally appear - romanesco, watermelon radishes, sprouts, and spring onions (to name a few).

Winter presents a golden opportunity to get to know and appreciate these vegetables that tend to play second during the main season. We do our best to balance out each week's box so that you'll have new and exciting seasonal options to try, along with a solid base of familiar and versatile staples.

This week, I'm including a short list of my favorite vegetable oriented cookbooks and blogs in the interest of inspiration. There are some truly incredible, innovative chefs out there putting time and energy into seasonal eating - you'll recognize some of them from our weekly recipes.

Have suggestions for great vegetable recipe resources that you don't see listed here? Email and let us know - we'd love to have them in the collection!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 4/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

With an icy winter storm on its way, this week we’re feeling grateful as ever for our incredibly tenacious delivery drivers, Mike Berlin (local delivery) and Jason Berger (Tahoe/Truckee/Reno delivery). Getting boxes delivered safely and on-time is a complicated endeavor to begin with - add wild winter weather patterns into the mix and things get even trickier. We’re lucky that these two reliable humans are both willing and able to get our veggies where they need to go, week after week, rain or shine. If you see them out and about, make sure to give them a wave and remind them of how great they are!

We are delivering "as usual" this week with lots of plans surrounding the upcoming storm. We will keep you updated about any delays via email and list late pickup hours for your site in the delivery reminder.

Your boxes this week are full of some true winter gems. Romanesco, mizuna, rutabagas, shallots, and beyond, bound to nourish you and add some color to cold and snowy days. Enjoy!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 3/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

It’s hard to deny how wonderful a dose of false-spring feels in the midst of January. We spend all winter chasing the sun and then here it is, warming us from our toes to the tips of our chins. Still, weather like this has us crossing our fingers that the many inches of rain our region so desperately needs are on their way sooner rather than later. Rain to water our fields, to fill rivers and reservoirs, security against a dry season that is never all that far away. And so we wait, soaking up the warmth and listening to the frogs sing from roadside and field. Enjoy your boxes this week - full of edible sunshine for the days ahead!

CSA Newsletter Week 2/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 2/52 of 2021

Dear Farm Members,

This past week, we planted 1500 tomato seeds and dreamed about tomato sandwiches and the heat of summer. With the help of some supplemental light, heat, and a little bit of luck, these very first tomato plants will be ready to transplant into one of our hoophouses by mid-February, putting us well on our way to early summer tomatoes. Winter is certainly where many dreams are born in farming, when time and potential energy are at their peak and the promise of a new season stretches out before us. A slower pace, sometimes (but not always) at the mercy of winter weather, also means an opportunity to complete projects and carry out new ideas, whether that means fixing fences, building owl boxes, or repairing tractors. It’s easy to live with one foot in the future, and we do our best to balance out all that reckless idealism with a slightly more restful state of mind, the hallmark of our particular brand of seasonal work. We’ll be juggling the demands of the main season and harvesting truckloads of tomatoes before we know it! Here’s hoping this week finds you all happy, nourished, and well rested.

CSA Newsletter Week 51/35 - Final Delivery of 2020!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 51/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

Just like that, this week marks our last CSA delivery of 2020! We’ll be back in two short weeks, happy and well-rested, with as much amazing organic local produce as ever. Despite everything that this year has thrown our way - a global pandemic, record-breaking heat, fire, smoke - we find ourselves right back where we started, ready to sow seeds and do it all over again. Each season of farming requires that you constantly push the limits of your ability to adapt, and this year has certainly been no different. Through it all, we keep learning and dreaming up new ways to grow food, to grow community, to connect with each other and the earth, and to build resilience within ourselves.  It is a constant pursuit, and well worthwhile. Here’s hoping that his winter and holiday season finds you all safe and warm, with full hearts and bellies. We’ll see you next year!

CSA Newsletter Week 50/53

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 50/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

As we continue easing our fields out of production for the winter, progressively more and more of the items in your boxes will be coming from our partner farms*- Fully Belly, Coke, Riverdog, Terra Firma, Pinnacle, Super Tuber, and Natural Trading company. A few items, mainly storage crops like winter squash and carrots (extra sweet from all these cold nights), will continue to come from us for as long as our supply allows! We are ever grateful for the support of these farmer friends, and for the opportunity to provide produce through our CSA year-round. The collaborative network we’ve built together with these folks has allowed us to extend the season for our members, rest our fields , and support fellow organic farmers with similar ethics and growing practices to our own. We’re stronger together!

CSA Newsletter Week 49/50

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 49/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

After a few days off to rest and celebrate, the weight of this past season, and of the winter to come, has really begun to sink in. Thank you to every last one of you for the outpouring of support you have offered us throughout all of the challenges 2020 has thrown at us. We can’t do this without you!

As we ease into winter, sights have shifted to an exciting project that’s already partially underway - the massive transition of most of our farm operations from our ‘homesite’ on Blind Shady Rd. to our main farm site on Birchville Rd. I cannot begin to explain what a game-changer this will be for the farm. For years, we’ve managed a constant, complex schlep from one site to the other - transplants, tools, humans, produce, etc. all have to be loaded up and transported on a daily basis. Our new evergreen lease with the Bear Yuba Land Trust has given us the land security we’ve desperately needed in order to move ahead in building permanent infrastructure, and to consolidate our production into a single farm site. This means building a new greenhouse, modifying the on-site barn, moving all of our tools and supplies, and the list goes on! It’s an incredible opportunity to finally be able to dream up a brighter future for what this farm can become, and of what we’ll be able to offer this community as a result. We’re excited to share all these developments as things move along, and will keep you all posted. For now, we wish you the best that this season has to offer - clear days, crisp nights, good food, and plenty of time (or facetime) with the ones you love.

CSA Newsletter Week 48/53 - Thankful for Escarole!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 48/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

This week, among many things, we are grateful for escarole. Easily mistaken for a giant head of lettuce, this leafy green gem goes above and beyond - transcending lettuce not just in volume but with crisp texture and the delicious sharp flavor that graces all chicories (although you’ll find it’s much milder than radicchio). We love it in a sweet and citrusy salad, or, If bitter isn’t your thing, braised to perfection alongside white beans, good olive oil, and a dusting of parmesan. At a time when gratitude for abundance is front and center, escarole shines - humble, gracious, and completely magnificent. Enjoy!

CSA Newsletter Week 47/53 - Thank you FARMERS!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 47/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

This week marks the end of our ‘main’ season of farming, and the conclusion of this year’s farm internship. For 8 months out of each year, we are joined by 3-5 energetic, bright-eyed interns who form the backbone of our crew throughout the entirety of the season. Each lends their own life experience, opinion, and personality to their work, offering diverse skill sets and knowledge to the farm as a whole. They constantly inspire our crew with the innovation and ingenuity that comes with renewed perspective, and we are ever grateful for the opportunity to work with such brilliant, hard-working folks.

This has been a particularly hard year in so many ways, and it is with much gratitude that I’d like to thank both our interns and crew for their incredible work and undeniable contributions. Nate, Christy, Becky, Anna, Mike, Grace, Kritters, Maia, Cullen, Gally, Evan, and Jake - thank you for all that you do! The world is a better place with all of you in it.

CSA Newsletter Week 46/53 - Rain at last!

What a huge relief it is to get some rain and cool weather at long last! Water is a much needed balm for this parched land, and we’ll happily welcome every drop we can get. As the chaos of summer leaves us and the days turn towards dark and cold, the farm, like many of us, is moving into its most restful state. Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to harvest what’s left in the field, supplementing with produce from our winter-share farm friends as the season continues.

This week, your boxes come complete with a final round of sweet, crunchy, hard-earned celery. To say that celery is finicky is an understatement - it’s slow growing, needs huge amounts of water and nutrients, plenty of sun, and a bit of shade (a hard combination to come by mid-summer). And although it’s certainly not the biggest star of the vegetable world, we think it shines bright just the same. However you choose to enjoy it, we hope that its versatility and delicate flavor lend depth and character to winter salads and hearty stews alike on these chilly nights!

CSA Newsletter Week 45/53

Exciting news! November 1st marks the beginning of Nisenan Heritage Month, a Nisenan-led community educational opportunity that seeks to offer reflection and insight into the stories of Nisenan people and the Nevada City Nisenan Rancheria.

Nevada City and much of the surrounding area (including both of our Mountain Bounty farm sites) rests on land that Nisenan people have called home since ancient times. As a farm, we recognize that the land we operate on is unceded indigenous territory, and pay monthly “rent” to the Nevada City Rancheria’s 'Ancestral Homelands Reciprocity Program’ via our lease with the Bear Yuba Land Trust.

As a result of historically anti-indigenous government action and legislation, the Nevada City Rancheria is no longer federally recognized by the United States. This means that “tribal members are denied access to the federal Indian programs created to support their health, education, housing and economic stability.” Donations and reciprocity payments are crucially instrumental in the “preservation, protection and perpetuation of the Nisenan people and their culture into the future, while advocating for the restoration of the Nevada City Rancheria’s federal recognition.” (California Heritage Indigenous Research Project).

We encourage all of you to take some time this month to support local Nisenan culture and to learn more about their history and the interconnected story of this land. Check out the list of links below for more information, and click here to make a donation to this year’s Nisenan Heritage Month fundraising campaign. Thank you and have a fantastic week!

CSA Newsletter Week 44/53

This week, your boxes come bearing so many of the incredible gifts that October has to offer, including our friend, the humble sweet potato. Rich, versatile, and nutrient dense, this vining, heat-loving root vegetable really shines in hearty fall dishes. We love them baked, mashed, boiled, and fried, although for sweeter preparations you’ll want to cook them low and slow (this article by Kitchn explains why). Added bonus- they store best at room temperature, and are perfectly content to sit out on the countertop or in a dark pantry until you’re ready to use them. With one of the longer growing seasons out of all the different crops we grow at the farm, these roots are a true labor of love. Enjoy!

CSA Newsletter Week 43/53

CSA Newsletter Week 43/53

As we near the end of this incredibly chaotic season of farming, it is our joy and privilege to have finally found the time and bandwidth to attend a handful of farmers markets! Hopefully those of you who visit the downtown Nevada City market on Saturdays had the opportunity to wave from a proper distance, or to shop the booth and say ‘hi’ to our farmers. The decision to step back from the market this past summer was difficult to make, and we’ve missed the in-person connection that markets give us to our local community. Needless to say, we’re happy to be back at it. Next Saturday (October 24th) will be the last market we work during this short-but-sweet season, and we’d love to see your happy (masked) faces. We’ll be stocking our booth with all of the best fall vegetables, and maybe even a pumpkin or two. Hope to see you there!

CSA Newsletter Week 42/53 - Rain for Rent

Slightly cooler temps were a treat for us all this week! Still, the rain our region desperately needs continues to elude us. The lack of moisture adds another pinch point for us at the farm, where we’re currently attempting to germinate large fields of cover crop before the days become too short. ‘Cover crop’ refers to the blend of beneficial plants that we seed into our fields each fall to protect and improve the health of our soil over the wet winter months. With no rain in the forecast, we instead create the rain - something that involves setting up and running an elaborate amount of very sizable overhead irrigation systems. It’s a big job, so let’s keep crossing our fingers and hoping that things take a turn towards stormy.
