Dear Farm Members,

As summer vacation season comes to a close, I want to give a quick FSA (Farm Service Announcement) about how our vacation holds work. We offer unlimited vacation holds, for all shares, and you can easily place your share on hold from your Member Dashboard. The hold deadline is Friday at 11pm for changes to delivery for the following week. You do not pay for the weeks your share is on hold!

Vegetable Shares (Year-round): When you purchase a subscription, you prepay for either 25 or 4 deliveries. When you place your share on hold, you don't use one of your prepaid deliveries, so that delivery gets added to the end of your subscription. For example, if you pay for 4 weeks at a time, then place your share on hold for one week, your share will renew again in 5 weeks. You do not pay for weeks your share is on hold. You don't receive credit on your account for vacation holds on your vegetable share because you receive all prepaid deliveries before your share renews again.

Fruit and Flower Shares (Seasonal): If you pay in advance for the whole season, you receive credit on your account at the end of the season for any weeks you've placed your share on hold. If you pay for 4 weeks at a time, you don't use one of your prepaid deliveries the week your share is on hold and your share will renew again once you've received 4 deliveries.

The hold deadline is Friday at 11pm for changes to your share for the following week. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding vacation holds.

  • Summerset Peaches (Bright yellow with hardly any blush to speak of, Summerset is a freestone peach with a distinct, bold flavor. Sweet and juicy with a tart, acidic bite, it is a nice contrast to the sweet Cal Red that precedes it. Summerset has a nice firm texture that holds up when frozen and it's among our favorite peaches to bake with.)

  • August Fire Nectarines (These mighty and sun-bathed nectarines have incredible tang and brightness. When ripe, they have an incredible balance of sweet and acid that feels like a little fire-cracker of flavor.)

  • Emerald Beaut Plums (A freestone plum, the Emerald Beaut is a delicate green that turns golden with a hint of a blush. It has a firmer texture than the Santa Rosa with a crisp almost crunchy mouthfeel. One of our most hardy fruit, the Emerald Beaut just gets sweeter and sweeter without losing texture as it ages.)

  • Hosui Asian Pears (The Hosui is popular in both Japan and in California. Hosuis have a rougher, thicker skin than the other Asian pear varieties we grow. They have a flesh that while still crunchy has a more melting mouthful, making the texture combination when eaten out of hand spectacular. Very sweet with a mild pear taste, their round shape and beautiful golden hue make them ideal for presentation with a distinctively Autumnal feel. )

  • Reed avocados (Reed avocados are larger, rounder, and creamier than the popular Hass variety. They're widely known for their creamy smooth texture and buttery flesh.)

Dear Farm Members,

This week we celebrate the final corn harvest and with it, what feels like the end of the summer season. While a few summer crops will stick around as the days slow down, we'll soon say goodbye to melons and corn. Corn is one of our most space, nutrient, time, and water intensive crops so growing it for you all is a real labor or love and dedication to our love for sweet corn.

For those of you who don't know, an adorable song about corn has taken over the internet this week. It's rare that the viral video of the week can be referenced in this weekly newsletter and I'd like to leave you with the song's lyrics below. You can also watch the short video here.

Dear Farm Members,

Every day around noon, our whole crew pauses what they are doing to take a break and eat lunch. While that's not entirely out of the ordinary, however, what's extraordinary about this act is that we rest under the shade of a majestic oak tree that must be over 150 years old. This tree provides a much needed reprieve from the elements for not only the farmers, but also some of our storage crops. As garlic, onions, and winter squash come in from the fields, they take a few weeks under the oak to dry and cure in the shade. This tree has hosted countless lunch breaks, potlucks, burrito days, secret santa exchanges, check-ins, harvest festivals and helped cultivate the community that we hold most dear. During a recent discussion of "what would we be most sad about to lose to a fire," it was an immediate consensus that we'd be devastated to lose this tree. We're beyond grateful for a place to rest, gather, and celebrate. And we hope for many more opportunities for connection with each other in the future.

  • O' Henry or Cal Red peaches

  • Flavorheart pluots (Flavor Heart gets its name from its distinctively tapered shape. Its dense, pale yellow flesh is very low in acid and the sweetness and color contrast strikingly with its dark purple, almost black skin. For the best eating experience, Farmer Al recommends leaving the fruit on your kitchen countertop for a few days until it gets soft. 'Cool the soft fruit in your refrigerator and enjoy a delightful sweet treat like no other," he says!)

Dear Farm Members,

Hash browns, gnocchi, hasselback, mashed, smashed and baked potatoes... We can't stop thinking about potatoes! This past week we finished harvesting all of our 26 beds of potatoes. Planted the first week of March, these potatoes have survived both several cold snaps in the spring, and the relentless 100 degree days of summer in the foothills. During the first cold snap, we irrigated them all night long in order to prevent their tender tops from freezing. The things we do for a good potato crop! Potatoes, onions, carrots and winter squash are all items we grow during the summer and then store them in order to give them out in the winter. Part of farming is strategizing how to grow as much as you can throughout the season and provide for our CSA members in the winter season while it's tougher to grow things. We're lucky to have farm partners to work with in the winter but we also love giving boxes full of Mountain Bounty Farm storage crops in the winter!

While you won't find potatoes in your shares this week, there will be many potatoes to come throughout the fall and winter and we hope you enjoy them!

  • Cal Red peaches (The beloved Cal Red is in a class of its own and is the "Oh my God" peach. Aptly named for the Golden State, the Cal Red is a beautiful golden peach marked with a gentle, sun-kissed blush.)

  • Flavor King pluots (A dark-skinned pluot with yellow-red flesh, it has an intense rich flavor combined with sweet, spicy tones that are reminiscent of the Santa Rosa. A nice acid bite and firm texture that softens beautifully as the fruit continues to ripen, the Flavor King is amazing out of hand and equally good for baking. They come off the tree right at the peak of flavor.)

Dear Farm Members,

It’s hard to believe that it is finally August, but here we are! Month of lifting heavy things, harvesting storage crops and long days spent transplanting for the fall. We’ve been incredibly impressed by the consistent quality and quantity of the produce we’ve been able to bring out of the fields each week, and our box values, as they typically do in the summer months, continue to hover well above the average cost per box.


We look forward to this next season of farming. If you are thinking of us, we’ll be crossing our fingers for smoke free days and the strength and resilience to keep our spirits high and your boxes overflowing. Wish us luck!

  • Summer Lady peaches (An early-ripening variant of the O'Henry, it is similarly well-balanced and aromatic. Slightly more round and uniform than its O'Henry parentage, the Summer Lady has deep burgundy streaks at maturity and delights our tastebuds almost a full two weeks earlier.)

  • August Red nectarines (These late season nectarine that is elegantly shaped and rich in flavor, with deep red skin and warm orange flesh.)

  • Crimson Royale pluots (With an elongated shape similar to an apricot, the Crimson Royale has a tangy red skin which contrasts deliciously with the sweet orange flesh within.)

  • Reed avocados (These softball-sized specialty avocados have thick green pebbly and easy to peel skin which gives way to a buttery and creamy flesh)

Dear Farm Members,

You might read the list of items for the vegetable share this week and think, wait, melons?! In the vegetable share!? You read that right, it's melon time. For the next few weeks, you’ll receive a variety of musk melons and watermelons in your vegetable share. We absolutely love growing melons and love sharing our favorite varieties with you.

We grow a little bit of each variety in order to get enough melons to give to all our members over several weeks. Here's a breakdown of the melon varieties you could receive in the next few weeks:

  • Hannah's Choice: Aromatic, very sweet, and full of flavor.

  • Athena: Athena cantaloupe has exceptional sweetness. The aromatics of this fruit are honey and floral with a sweet melon aroma.

  • Halona: Excellent flavor and muskiness with sweet orange flesh.

  • Visa: Green flesh, galia melon with wonderful sweetness due to the high Brix Content.

  • Ocelot: mini seedless watermelon with tiger striped rind. Mouth-watering flesh and firm, dense texture combine for an excellent eating experience—tastes like summer!

  • Mini Love: Sweet and firm watermelon. Distinctive, bright green rind with dark green stripes and dense, bright red flesh.

  • Natsu Cocoa: a new variety for us this year, Very uniform fruit with exceptional sweetness and dark green, tiger-striped rind. The epitome of summer — Natsu means "summer" in Japanese.

It's hard to believe that August is almost here and yet, we keep bustling to the same speedy rhythm - plant, harvest, pack, weed, rest, repeat. This is ‘peak season’ on the farm, an elegant way of saying that right now, everything happens all at once. In classic mid-summer farm fashion, last week one of our irrigation pumps broke, resulting in us only being able to irrigate small sections at a time and delaying some of our fall plantings. Farming can sometimes feel like something is always going wrong, and yet, with determination and our honed problem solving skills, we can get the parts fixed and begin planting and irrigating normally again. Our crew is at its strongest and swiftest, using all the energy we can spare to get everything that needs doing, done and we wouldn't be able to pull this off without them!

  • Zee Lady Peaches (The Rich Zee is an excellent early variety to whet the appetite for summer peaches. It is much smaller than later varieties and is more of a 'water' peach than a 'sugar' peach, but a big crowd pleaser at the farmer's markets. It has a strong fragrance, a gentle flavor, and tender, juicy flesh.)

  • Flavortop Nectarines (The Flavor Top is one of the highest scoring nectarine varieties in regional fruit tastings. It's a beautiful variety, with bold streaks of red and yellow and firm succulent flesh. They hold up extremely well when sliced so are ideally suited for a fragrant midsummer fruit salad and are one of the varieties we especially recommend for grilling. Flavor Tops are available in early to mid July.)

Dear Farm Members,

With the very warm weather of last week, we've entered peak summer territory, The tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and corn are here and we are patiently awaiting the first melon. This week, we'll harvest our first corn patch. There’s something about wading through the green maze of stalks, silky tassels high overhead, that transports you into another world entirely. First thing in the morning while it’s still cool, our crew fills cloth ‘apple picking’ bags to the brim, grabbing the fattest golden ears and removing them from the stalk with a swift rip and twist. In the past, we’ve experimented with cutting off the very tip of each ear to remove any potential corn worms, but quality has improved so much in recent years that we’ve decided to leave it to fate and forgo that step. Our advice? Peel back the silk and investigate the top of each ear soon as you get home, removing any corn worms you might encounter. This ensures that your corn will keep in the fridge, unassailed, until you’re ready to eat it yourself - in salsa, as fritters, grilled and slathered with butter, whatever you can dream up - the sky’s the limit. Here’s hoping for a wonderful week, and that your boxes leave you feeling ‘farm rich’!

  • Summer Flare Nectarines (Our Summer Flare trees produce some of the largest and juiciest nectarines we see. Rich in flavor, they're often solid red with hardly a streak of yellow in the skin. A clingstone, the Summer Flare is an ideal variety to bite right into and eat out of hand.)

CSA Newsletter Week 28/52 (July 12 & 14)

Dear Farm Members,

At long last, the first tomatoes are here! Seeded the first few weeks of January and transplanted in our temporary caterpillar tunnels in mid-March, these tomatoes have had a very full life thus far. They have survived two cold snaps this spring and thanks to being tucked in and protected by row covering, they are thriving and ready earlier than we expected! Tomatoes are the epitome of summer and we hope you enjoy this first taste - and many more to come throughout the season!


The long, sunny days carry on as we turn our attention towards fall transplanting (50+ beds of just broccoli) and begin the process of harvesting our storage crops - potatoes and onions. Wish us luck!

  • Flavor King Pluots (A dark-skinned pluot with yellow-red flesh, it has an intense rich flavor combined with sweet, spicy tones that are reminiscent of the Santa Rosa. A nice acid bite and firm texture that softens beautifully as the fruit continues to ripen, the Flavor King is amazing out of hand and equally good for baking. They come off the tree right at the peak of flavor.)

  • Suncrest Peaches (A Slow Food Ark heritage variety, the Suncrest has all the old-fashioned taste of days gone by. It's a truly memorable peach whose firm but juicy flesh provides a real eat-over-the-sink experience. Gently tapered, the Suncrest has hardly any blush to speak of on its rich yellow skin. A more fragile variety, the Suncrest bruises easily when picked, but as many of our farmers market customers know, a picking bruise means the fruit is truly tree-ripened and extra delicious.)

  • Honeylicious Nectarines (These mighty and sun-bathed nectarines have incredible tang and brightness. They have an incredible balance of sweet and acid that feels like a little fire-cracker of flavor. They are great for slicing into summer salads, adding to fruit crumbles, or even sliced in half and grilled!)

CSA Newsletter Week 27/52 (July 5th and 7th)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 27/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

As some of you may know, our farm on Birchville Road was under mandatory evacuation last week due to the Rices fire. Fortunately, the fire stayed away from our farm and our crew were safe in evacuating the area. After a few days of being unable to access the property, we joyfully returned on Friday to harvest for the Nevada City Farmers Market. This time of year things grow so fast and without our eyes on the fields for a few days, we returned to baseball bat sized zucchini, corn as tall as the moon, and an even taller to-do list. 

This week we'll scramble to get ourselves back situated all while singing the praises of the many firefighters and emergency personnel who were able to get the Rices fire under control and who will work tirelessly this season to protect many communities throughout the region from wildfire. We are so grateful for not only them, but also the support of you, our CSA members, who really put the "community" in community supported agriculture last week as you supported us during a challenging time. We are so thankful for you!

It's a beautiful variety, with bold streaks of red and yellow and firm succulent flesh. They hold up extremely well when sliced so are ideally suited for a fragrant midsummer fruit salad and are one of the varieties we especially recommend for grilling.)
