CSA Newsletter Week 36/53 - Peppers!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 36/53 of 2020

Dear Farm Members,

Right on schedule, our peppers have been ripening and steadily making their way into your boxes. Some of these gems are easily recognizable - the green bell pepper, jalapeno, and beloved sweet red pepper- while others may be slightly less familiar. What follows is a brief guide to help demystify the 2020 pepper lineup in all its glory.

Green Bell Pepper- Mild, green, blocky pepper with thick walls, thin skin, small seeds, and a hollow interior. Delicious sauteed in curries and stir-frys, and perfect for stuffing. These peppers change slightly in color throughout the season, and later offerings may be a muddier green, or even partially red.

Sweet Red Pepper- Sweet and mild, crisp, red pepper with thin skin and small seeds. Delicious roasted, sauteed, or served raw in salads, slaws and relishes.

Shishito Pepper - A japanese frying pepper. Mild, green to red, 2-4” long wrinkled fruit with thin walls and skin that make it perfect for frying en masse in a cast iron with a little bit of oil and salt. These will usually be bagged when they appear in your boxes.

Jimmy Nardello Pepper - Italian sweet red frying pepper. Named after Jimmy Nardello, whose parents brought the seeds along with them when they immigrated from Italy. Deep, wrinkled, crimson red 6-10” long peppers. The sweetest red pepper you’ve ever tasted- amazing fried like a shishito or prepared in any of the ways you’d use a sweet red pepper

Jalapeno Pepper (spicy!) -  Deep green, smooth, thick walled, 2-4" long peppers. The perfect amount of spice for adding to fresh tomato salsa.

Lunchbox Pepper - Red, yellow, and orange mini-bell peppers. Sweet and crunchy with thick walls. A perfect snack served fresh with your favorite dip, or prepared like a sweet pepper. Perfect for pickling!

I’m also happy to announce that the farm is absolutely overflowing with an abundance of tomatoes! Starting September 8th we’ll be offering 10# flats of beautiful, ripe, red slicers as an optional add-on for pick-up at our Western Nevada County CSA sites. If you’ve been dreaming of canning, freezing, saucing, or making a big batch of fresh salsa - this is your chance.
