Dear Farm Members,
This week we begin the process of harvesting our spring onions from the field and they make their way into all the vegetable boxes this week. These beauties are fresh from the field and there’s something about them that is truly special and beautiful to behold.
Onions have an incredibly long growing season (we start seed for our spring onions in September) and require quite a bit more weeding and upkeep in the field than most crops. On top of that, we‘re obligated to harvest and cure them during peak season, when our workload is already quite heavy. But year after year, we continue to grow them because we absolutely adore these stinky, delicious gems. Reliable and steadfast, they add an incredible depth of flavor to every dish, and never fail to remind us of how beautifully complex even the humblest of vegetables can be. Enjoy this ‘Ode to the Onion’, an annual Mountain Bounty newsletter tradition!
Ode To the Onion
By Pablo Neruda
Onion,
luminous flask,
your beauty formed
petal by petal,
crystal scales expanded you
and in the secrecy of the dark earth
your belly grew round with dew.
Under the earth
the miracle
happened
and when your clumsy
green stem appeared,
and your leaves were born
like swords
in the garden,
the earth heaped up her power
showing your naked transparency,
and as the remote sea
duplicating the magnolia,
so did the earth
make you,
onion
clear as a planet
and destined
to shine,
constant constellation,
round rose of water,
upon
the table
of the poor.
You make us cry without hurting us.
I have praised everything that exists,
but to me, onion, you are
more beautiful than a bird
of dazzling feathers,
heavenly globe, platinum goblet,
unmoving dance
of the snowy anemone
and the fragrance of the earth lives
in your crystalline nature.
Enjoy your share this week,
Grace

Dear Farm Members,
As the first early tomatoes ripen under the strawberry moon, we finally start to feel like summer might be here! We've been so fortunate with some moderate spring weather and our crops are basking in all their glory. This week we'll celebrate the longest day of the year and the official start of summer, June 21st, by planting our second succession of melons, a true summer treat, and frantically chasing the end of the weekly to-do list.
Summer means time for vacation for many of you and I wanted to remind you about our unlimited vacation holds for your shares. You can place your share on hold from your Member Dashboard (https://mountainbounty.csaware.com/accounts/dash.jsp) by Friday at 11pm the week before. Don't forget to hold each share if you get more than one share from us. More information on how vacation holds work can be found here or feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions.
Enjoy your share this week,

Flavorcrest Peaches (A classic California peach, the Flavorcrest has a beautiful crimson red blush over bold yellow skin. It's a well-known peach whose attractiveness and bold sweetness make it the third most widely planted fresh-market peach in California. Flavorcrests at Frog Hollow enjoy more time on the branch to fully develop their distinctive sweetness.)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 24/52 of 2022
Dear Farm Members,
I'm reaching back into the archives this week for one of my favorite newsletters of all time from our beloved farmer, Kale Blevins:
My question for you all this week; does everyone really still hate fennel? Before moving here to farm in 2017, my only understanding of fennel was that it was a vegetable that I did not buy, and therefore a vegetable that I certainly would not grow. I’d eaten it a grand total of... one time (I know, shocking), in an italian wedding soup lovingly crafted by a fennel-savvy companion. Hindsight 20/20, I just didn’t realize exactly what I was missing out on.
Growing the diversity of vegetables that we do for a CSA of this scale means that there’s a place for almost everything, novelty and staple alike, all in their own time. Fennel, to my knowledge, has mostly fallen into the category of ‘novelty item’. Over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of feedback that folks either don’t like it or just don’t know what to do with it. So we play it cool and tone it down, sneaking it in every once in a while, alternating between boxes, hoping to gradually indoctrinate hordes of unsuspecting CSA members one season at a time. A couple years ago, we even grew fennel for Sierra Harvest’s “Harvest of the Month” program. Mountain Bounty fennel was distributed to classrooms across the county for students to taste, which we all thought felt like Real Progress.
So is it working? Are all of you finding a way to let fennel into your hearts? Personally, I love fennel, and I don’t really get all the hype. There’s the licorice-y flavor, but it’s mild and sweet, and honestly, part of the draw. It’s versatile, and you can eat it raw, roasted, caramelized, even pickled. It keeps well in the fridge, so you can go ahead and ignore it for a little if you want-so forgiving! And it’s a champion in the field, an ‘umbelliferae’, not much of a rabble-rouser, eventually producing an umbrella-shaped inflorescence that beneficial bugs and pollinators love.
Do you love fennel? Want to see more of it in your boxes? Let us know! And if not, don’t sweat it. We’re happy to be your official fennel support system.
Your boxes this week are making their way to you packed with loads of amazing vegetables, and even a little bit of fennel. We hope you’re all enjoying the good-ness this season has to offer, soaking up sunny days, and keeping your bellies full. See you next week!
Enjoy your shares this week,
Kale

Golden Sweet Apricots (A smaller apricot that makes up for whatever it lacks in size with its rich flavor. Another California born and bred variety, it has a brilliant golden orange skin with a soft blush. Goldensweets typically harvest from late mid-June to early July.
June Honey Peaches (One of our early varieties, the June Honey peach brings in June with a bang. Red blush all around, these clinging peaches are tame in acidity, but have a nice sweetness and juiciness that are perfect for eating out of hand, in drink and in salads.)
Santa Rosa Plums (Santa Rosa plums are something special. Famous for their beautiful dark skin and yellow flesh. Named for its birthplace, this plum was bred by the famed California horticulturist Luther Burbank in his Santa Rosa plant research center. Red-skinned with a purple bloom, the Santa Rosa's amber flesh gets flushed with red as it ripens. This fruit is plump perfection with a bit of tartness in the skin that balances out the sweet and juicy flesh.)

Week 23/52 of 2022
Dear Farm Members,
I come to you this week with a visual representation of all the magical things that have been happening on the farm the past few weeks. For those who want to see more of what we do in pictures, you can follow us on instagram.
First up, last week we had 17 people working with the crew on Wednesday, which might be an MBF record! It takes many hands to harvest, wash and pack all this produce (not to mention, seed, plant, irrigate, and weed!) and we are so grateful for our incredibly hardworking and talented crew who make this all possible.
Last week we planted over 9,000 pepper plants!! For those wanting to double check my math, our beds are 250 ft long, we plant 3 rows per bed, space the plants at 8 inches apart and we planted 9 beds. The first peppers you'll receive in your boxes will be shishitos!
Our Spanish Red Garlic is in the box this week and we really hope you enjoy it! Garlic is an interesting crop to grow and always a treat to pull up these big beautiful bulbs that will keep your meals perfectly seasoned all season long.
We are all patiently awaiting the arrival of our first carrots! We have quite the reputation for great tasting carrots and we can't wait for them to make their debut in the CSA boxes in a couple of weeks.
We hope you enjoy those Sugar Snap Peas in the box this week, all lovingly picked by hand by your farmers. Fortunately, the plants are loaded this week and the trelllised plants making picking a breeze.

Gold Dust Peaches (The Gold Dust is one of our favorites and the first outstanding peach of the season for eating out of hand. An heirloom variety, it is low in acid and smaller than most of our peaches. Its juicy, melting texture and sweetness can hardly be beaten. These ripen beautifully on the counter.)
Leahcot Apriums (Developed by Floyd Zaiger, this aprium resembles an apricot with attractive orange skin and a rich apricot flavor. Sweet even when the flesh is still crisp, the Leah Cot continues to ripen into soft juicy delicacies.)
Cot n Candy Apriums (Crossbreed between a plum and an apricot that most strongly resembles its apricot parentage. The Cot N Candy is a white-fleshed aprium with a more subtle sweetness than orange varieties, but with notes of honeydew and a soft aroma, they are sure to please.)

Dear CSA Members,
June! It's (almost) here! June is a wonderfully insane time at the farm. Plants seem to double in size overnight, and with them the weeds that also enjoy regular irrigation and nutritious soil. June keeps us busy and humbled. Speaking of things that seem to grow overnight, we’ll begin to harvest the first of our highly anticipated sugar snap peas this week. We've grown and trellised a lovely planting of climbing peas, which have astounded us each week with their immense volume, stretching tendrils, and teeny, dainty flowers. Over the next couple weeks, as you snack away on the snap peas in your vegetable boxes, remember that they are carefully and lovingly grown, and picked entirely by hand! Truly a labor of love from our farmers, to all of you.
Enjoy your shares this week,
Grace

SUMMER FRUIT SHARES (provided by Frog Hollow Farm)
Starts this week, Tuesday, May 31st!
We're so excited to partner with Frog Hollow Farm for the Summer Fruit Share starting this week. For the shares this week, they've partnered with other organic farms to help supply the bounty. Moving forward, all fruit in the Summer Fruit Share will be from Frog Hollow Farm.
Robada Apricots - Frog Hollow Farm (A large and robust apricot, the Robada has a particularly vibrant blush that makes the fruit seem to glow on the branch, almost like tiny Japanese lanterns lit from within.)
Crimson Lady Peaches - Frog Hollow Farm (The Crimson Lady is one of the first varieties off the tree. It has a firm texture that is more springy than meltingly juicy. When dried it is uniquely chewy and delicious.)
Pixie Tangerines - Churchill Orchards (A California favorite, these sweet, seedless tangerines have a thick skin and juicy flesh that makes them excellent for eating out of hand.)
Hass Avocados - Churchill Orchards (With a rich creamy texture, nutty flavor, and a small to medium seed, it's no surprise that the Hass avocado is the most popular variety grown in California. The skin is easy to peel and darkens from green to purplish-black as it ripens.)
Blueberries- Triple Delight (These blueberries are hand-picked one berry at a time at their optimal ripeness. Triple Delight takes pride in the quality and freshness of their blueberries...but their incredible taste is what makes them stand out above the rest!)
SUMMER FLOWER SHARES are available now and you can join here.

Dear CSA Members,
This week’s box has one of spring's most interesting looking vegetables - kohlrabi! You may be like what in the world are these alien creatures that have found their way into my box, we are here to help you understand how to prep, cook, and enjoy these spring treats.
Kohlrabi is easy to grow, quick to harvest, and delicious on the plate - perfect for planting back early in the season and able to withstand the insane temperature fluctuations we've experienced this spring. Kohlrabi is sweet and crunchy and related to other brassics, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and brussel sprouts. It's delicious raw, steamed, and/or roasted and is similar in taste to broccoli stems but with a bit of peppery sweetness. We hope you enjoy them while they’re here! We’ve included plenty of recipes below, and are, as always, here to offer inspiration if you need it.

Week 19/52 of 2022
Dear CSA Members,
After some very chilly weather this weekend and mid 80s forecasted for next weekend, we find ourselves in a bit of whiplash this spring navigating the ever changing weather patterns of this region. While we have our early tomatoes growing happily inside a temporary hoop house, we'll plant our first succession of outdoor tomatoes this week. We use a technique called grafting for outdoor tomato successions. We cut and recombine the tops or ‘scions’ of beloved big beef tomato plants with a hardy rootstock, creating a sort of glorious Frankenstein’s monster. The grafting process requires deep concentration and some fine motor skills in order to correctly line up the rootstock and scion and clip them together. Naturally, we make this into a fun competition and the best grating team wins a burrito.
Grafted tomato plants produce an incredibly high volume of fruit, and are much better at adapting to less than ideal growing environments - hotter days, cooler nights, less water, and everything in between. For us, they’re the key to a long and successful tomato season amidst the hot, dry conditions of a sierra foothills summer. And despite the extra time and effort it takes to produce these fancy transplants, they’re well worth it for the amount of tomato sandwiches we’ll be eating come July… and August, and September, and October!
As a reminder, our delivery day switches to Tuesday next week, May 17th, for all shares in Western Nevada County. Pick up times and CSA sites remain the same.

Dear CSA Members,
This week begins the first week of the summer season for the Nevada City Farmers Market. We will be attending the market every Saturday this season, from May to November. After a few years of an adjusted schedule, we are so excited to be back full time at the market. Each week our booth will be overflowing with seasonal goodies, including our legendary strawberries. Whether you need a few extra things for your meals this week or want to know what is coming in the box next week, stop by the market to meet your farmers and talk about what's for dinner and connect over the love for fresh produce. It's also a great place to pick up fresh bread, meat, fruit and flowers from other growers in the community. I'll be there almost every Saturday this summer, so make sure you swing by and say 'hi' to us and meet the many faces of Mountain Bounty Farm.

Dear CSA Members,
As spring-like temperatures return to the foothills, we begin to race the weeds that have flourished during the recent rains. As we peel back our row covering and reveal happy weeds and happier crops, we break out our many tools for cultivation and get to work. A busy week ahead for all of us.
A scattering of Mountain Bounty Farm produce is making its debut in the CSA shares this week. Throughout the winter, we partner with other regional farms to help supply the bounty for our year-round vegetable CSA. Come spring, our crops are ready to be harvested and eventually the box will be exclusively Mountain Bounty Farm produce through the end of the summer. This week we have cilantro, salad turnips, red russian kale, and lettuce. A few of these crops were unprotected while we experienced some unexpected hail storms and may have more damage than usual. Don't worry, they’ll still taste the same!
We have an exciting new partnership with Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood, CA who are going to provide our Summer Fruit Share! These shares are 7# of mostly stone fruit, including peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, plums, pluots, persimmons, quince, apples. Join today for shares starting the first week of June.
As a reminder, our delivery day in Western Nevada County changes to Tuesdays starting May 17th for all shares. Pick up times and CSA sites remain the same.

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 16/52 of 2022
Dear CSA Members,
There is an ideology in farming where you don't eat anything that's not in season and that you didn't grow yourself. This stems from deep pride in our work but it's also a very tough principle to follow. It has prompted me on more than one occasion to drive 25 minutes to the farm on a weekend because I need a bunch of cilantro for dinner even as I pass the grocery store on the way there.
I broke this rule this weekend and asked my Dad (who was visiting from Ohio) to purchase some english cucumbers for a special recipe. While my parents grew up with canned vegetables, they have grown to know and understand the depths of farming and the grasp it has on so many of us. So as a farmer of five years, I'd say my parents now have a pretty good connection to vegetables. My dad comes home from the store and says to me, "Grace, I'm so proud of myself for knowing what english cucumbers are!" There on the counter are sitting two perfect green zucchini. I briefly thought about pretending they were cucumbers so I wouldn't have to break the news to my Dad. Instead, I offered some insights into the difference between the two and on a seperate trip to the store, we got the cucumbers and the dish was delicious. Cucumbers are one of the things I look forward to the most about summer. I wish I could say they were in the boxes this week, but alas, a few more weeks!
The moral of this story is that this can happen to anyone. And whether you've gotten our CSA box for 10 years or 2 weeks, there might be something you don't recognize every once in a while. And this is where we come in, ask us! Need tips and tricks for storage or meal prep, we've got you! May you never mistake a cucumber for a zucchini ever again.
Enjoy your shares this week,
Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 15/52 of 2022
Dear CSA Members,
As we harvested the spinach and bok choi for the CSA boxes this week, we experienced rain, strong winds, some snow and even some brief hail. We then spent the afternoon covering most of our fields with remay (fabric row cover), in hopes that our many beds of spring crops would survive the overnight lows. While this weather feels a bit like whiplash after the warm spring days of last week, we are extremely grateful for any and all rain in the forecast. Farming is all weather work and we want to express a deep appreciation for our hard working crew who powered through the elements to harvest and protect our crops. As all of these crops eventually make their way into the CSA boxes, remember that in their early lives some loving farmers covered them up and tucked them in so that we all could enjoy their bountiful harvest in the future.
Enjoy your shares this week,
Grace
