MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 50/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

As we continue easing our fields out of production for the winter, progressively more and more of the items in your boxes will be coming from our partner farms- Fully Belly Farm, Coke Farm, Riverdog, Terra Firma, Pinnacle, Super Tuber, Feeding Crane, and Natural Trading company. A few items, mainly storage crops like potatoes and carrots (extra sweet from all these cold nights), will continue to come from us for as long as our supply allows! We are ever grateful for the support of these farmer friends, and for the opportunity to provide produce through our CSA year-round. The collaborative network we’ve built together with these folks has allowed us to extend the season for our members, rest our fields, and support fellow organic farmers with similar ethics and growing practices to our own. We’re stronger together!

As we start planning for next year, we're looking to hire for our first-year farmer positions and management positions for the 2023 season. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested, check out our postings here: https://mountainbountyfarm.com/joinourteam. We offer competitive wages, paid vacation, paid sick leave, bonuses, 401k after one year, and a whole lot of veggies. It's a great place to work!

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 49/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

What a joy to have all this rain! And more to come! We rely on the rain we receive during winter months to irrigate throughout the entirety of the 'dry' season, which seems to get longer every year. It's a relief to see this precipitation materialize, here to fill up our figurative buckets.

This week, our winter crew will gather and put our heads together to order all the seeds we need for the 2023 season. This is a fun collaborative process with lots of price shopping and triple checking numbers to make sure we buy the right number of seeds. Fun fact, we ordered 300,000 scallion seeds for the year!

May this week find you all keeping cozy with full bellies, family, and friends amidst some wonderfully cozy weather.

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

CSA Newsletter Week 48 (11/30 & 12/1)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 48/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

One of the fun parts about farming is that some crops do better each year, and some simply.. do worse. At our end of year review, we spend a lot of time discussing each crop and how it did this season. We'll talk about pests, irrigation, disease, weather, etc and try to decipher what went wrong (or right) and how we can adapt for next year. In a lot of ways, farming is just running endless experiments with unlimited variables.

This season, our worst crop was beets. And if you haven't noticed, our logo is a beet bunch, so this was a big loss for us. While we did think to ourselves, maybe we should just finally change the logo to a broccoli head, we persevered and continued planting beets, hoping they would defeat their many nemesis and finally provide enough to give to all our CSA members. This is that week. For those of you who do not enjoy beets (approximately 20% of our survey responders), we are here to help. We've added extra beet recipes to help inspire your next great beet meal.

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 47/52 of 2022

Reminder: We deliver shares for both Western Nevada County and Tahoe/Truckee/Reno on Wednesday, November 23rd. Pickup times and CSA sites remain the same. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Dear Farm Members,

As many of us gather with our friends and family this week and reflect on the many things we have to be grateful for, we'd like to take a moment to appreciate the Nisenan, who have inhabited and stewarded this region of foothills and river canyons for thousands of years, and represent a powerful voice within our community.

November marks Nisenan Heritage month, as well as Native American Heritage month in California. This is a great time to take a moment to learn about the Nisenan Rancheria and their constant work towards regaining federal recognition, as well as to fully appreciate their long history in this place.

Mountain Bounty operates entirely on unceded Nisenan Land - every item in your boxes, any produce that you purchase from us at Briar Patch or at Farmers market, is as much a result of their work to care for this land as it is ours. An incredible cause to support, and every little bit helps. To learn more, or to donate, check out their website at Nisenan.org.

Enjoy your shares week,

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 46/52 of 2022

Reminder: Next week, we deliver on Wednesday (11/23) for Thanksgiving. All pickup sites and times remain the same. If you are going to be out of town, you can place your share on hold by FRIDAY (11/18) at 11pm.

Dear Farm Members,

This is the last week of our regular season, meaning we say goodbye to some of our First Year Farmers and other part-time folk, and our crew shrinks down to the year-round folk who will be sticking around for another season at Mountain Bounty Farm. Each year we are extremely blessed to be surrounded by hard-working, intelligent, curious and interesting people who want to work here and it's especially hard to see them go. We wish them well on their next adventure!

These last few days together will be filled with meetings discussing everything from irrigation to pest problems from our marketing strategy to our shopping list for next season. We'll also evaluate every crop we've grown over the past 9 months and look at how it did for us and how often we were able to give it in the CSA shares. And this is where you come in! We look at our CSA survey data about which crops you love and which crops you could bear to see less often in your boxes. We take this into consideration and leave this week of meetings with our crop plan for 2023.

So with that, a quick reminder to fill out our vegetable CSA survey so we can grow more of what you love in 2023! We'll select three winners for a free box on Friday.

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 45/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week we harvested over 9,000 radishes so that children all over Nevada County will have the opportunity to try a Red Rover Radish as part of the Harvest of the Month program with Sierra Harvest. This program brings fresh, local, organic produce to all the children in Western Nevada County schools once a month for the kids to try. We love having this opportunity to introduce kids to new and interesting produce. While fennel a few seasons back wasn't a big hit, we're hoping they love the spicy radishes!

You won't find radishes in your share this week (they went to all the kids!) but you will find a lot of other goodies that are ready to be roasted up on these chilly, rainy days.

Enjoy your shares week,

Grace

Newsletter Week 44/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 44/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

It’s been awhile since I’ve written the farm newsletter – thank you Kale and Grace for taking up the torch! I wanted to step back in briefly to share some thoughts on the state of the farm and news about possible new directions.

First, a reminder: This coming November 5th, we’ll be hosting a special gathering to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Please come join us. (Buy tickets here!) We will be spit roasting a whole pig from our friends at AM Ranch. The meal will be catered by our neighbors, the wonderful cooks at Purdon Studios. There will be vegetarian and vegan options. Also: live music, square dancing in the barn, games and crafts. I’m especially excited for square dancing, which I have no idea how to do but have been told it's beginner friendly and very fun!

Since its humble beginnings in 1997, farming on ¾ acre generously shared by old family friends, Mountain Bounty has grown into a farming powerhouse and community fixture. We’ve grown a lot of incredible produce, and even more importantly we’ve cultivated a crop of highly skilled farmers. Mountain Bounty is now run by a team of 4 senior farm managers with 10 or more years of experience farming here and elsewhere, with myself as occasional advisor and mother hen. We also have a crew of 15 farmers each season which are instrumental to our success and we rely on every day. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. The farm is constantly innovating and working to stay at the cutting edge of our craft, humming along producing consistently for 800 families, resilient to the many challenges we’ve faced, and ready for what comes.

After all these years, I’m now interested in more fully handing over the reins, selling the farm business, and moving on to new adventures. I’ve had a good long run. I started farming in the mid 90’s when I was in my 20’s, I’m now in my 50’s and ready for the next chapter. That’s both exciting and scary, mostly scary. Also, I think the farm could benefit from some fresh eyes, and new and different skills. I remain committed to the farm’s future success, and will stay involved as long as necessary to make sure your produce will keep on coming!

The ideal candidate(s) will be an individual or organization with farming or food experience, proven leadership skills, including the ability to manage and inspire a team, and a healthy dose of entrepreneurial spirit. I will remain as an advisor for whoever takes the helm as much as they want. Please spread the word, and get in touch if you would like more info. As this process unfolds I will share updates with our farm community.

With endless gratitude for all the years of support,

John Tecklin

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 43/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

For the past month or so, the chorus from our field managers (Cory and Jake) has been about fervently seeding cover crop. Cover cropping is an important part of protecting our soil from eroding over the rainy season and part of putting our fields to rest for the winter. Since that rainy season hasn't started yet, we'll be running irrigation to prepare the fields, seeding the cover crop and irrigating again to get a good germination and coverage from the cover crop. We'll also be here, patiently waiting for the rain in the long term forecast to materialize.

Many fall gems are making their way into the shares this week, including long awaited celery and napa cabbage. We hope you enjoy!

Dear Farm Members,

We're having a party! We're celebrating 25 years of farming in the foothills with an epic Harvest Festival and pig roast feast on Saturday, November 5th. As CSA members and an integral part of our community, we'd love to celebrate with you.

John Tecklin started Mountain Bounty Farm in 1997 and we're so proud of the farm we've grown to become after 25 years. Farming has its challenges, and this year was no exception. Fires, smoke, heat, crop disease and pests were all navigated this season by our incredibly hard working farmers. And now we've made it to the end of our season and we're definitely ready to celebrate. After a few years of not being able to meet in person with our community, we are so excited to host this event. We've put together an evening of farm fun for all ages including lawn games, crafts, live music with square dancing, and of course, delicious farm fresh food catered by our friends at Purdon Studios.

You can buy tickets beforehand via our website (https://mountainbountyfarm.com/shop) or at the event. Look forward to seeing you there!

Dear Farm Members,

This week at the farm brings perfect fall weather and an abundance of fall crops. This time of year is always a precious reminder of how lucky we are to spend our days outside. While picking tomatoes on Monday, we were encircled by dragonflies overhead, an orchestra of bees on the basil flowers, and the gentle squeaks of sandhill cranes far above in the clear blue skies. We’re excited for the opportunity to share all this goodness with you, and hope you’re enjoying the clear air and fall weather as much as we are.
