CSA Newsletter Week 20/52 (May 17&19)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS

Week 20/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

This week’s box has one of spring's most interesting looking vegetables - kohlrabi! You may be like what in the world are these alien creatures that have found their way into my box, we are here to help you understand how to prep, cook, and enjoy these spring treats.

Kohlrabi is easy to grow, quick to harvest, and delicious on the plate - perfect for planting back early in the season and able to withstand the insane temperature fluctuations we've experienced this spring. Kohlrabi is sweet and crunchy and related to other brassics, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale and brussel sprouts. It's delicious raw, steamed, and/or roasted and is similar in taste to broccoli stems but with a bit of peppery sweetness. We hope you enjoy them while they’re here! We’ve included plenty of recipes below, and are, as always, here to offer inspiration if you need it.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

CSA Newsletter Week 19/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 19/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

After some very chilly weather this weekend and mid 80s forecasted for next weekend, we find ourselves in a bit of whiplash this spring navigating the ever changing weather patterns of this region. While we have our early tomatoes growing happily inside a temporary hoop house, we'll plant our first succession of outdoor tomatoes this week. We use a technique called grafting for outdoor tomato successions. We cut and recombine the tops or ‘scions’ of beloved big beef tomato plants with a hardy rootstock, creating a sort of glorious Frankenstein’s monster. The grafting process requires deep concentration and some fine motor skills in order to correctly line up the rootstock and scion and clip them together. Naturally, we make this into a fun competition and the best grating team wins a burrito.

Grafted tomato plants produce an incredibly high volume of fruit, and are much better at adapting to less than ideal growing environments - hotter days, cooler nights, less water, and everything in between. For us, they’re the key to a long and successful tomato season amidst the hot, dry conditions of a sierra foothills summer. And despite the extra time and effort it takes to produce these fancy transplants, they’re well worth it for the amount of tomato sandwiches we’ll be eating come July… and August, and September, and October!

As a reminder, our delivery day switches to Tuesday next week, May 17th, for all shares in Western Nevada County. Pick up times and CSA sites remain the same.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 18/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

This week begins the first week of the summer season for the Nevada City Farmers Market. We will be attending the market every Saturday this season, from May to November. After a few years of an adjusted schedule, we are so excited to be back full time at the market. Each week our booth will be overflowing with seasonal goodies, including our legendary strawberries. Whether you need a few extra things for your meals this week or want to know what is coming in the box next week, stop by the market to meet your farmers and talk about what's for dinner and connect over the love for fresh produce. It's also a great place to pick up fresh bread, meat, fruit and flowers from other growers in the community. I'll be there almost every Saturday this summer, so make sure you swing by and say 'hi' to us and meet the many faces of Mountain Bounty Farm.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 16/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

As spring-like temperatures return to the foothills, we begin to race the weeds that have flourished during the recent rains. As we peel back our row covering and reveal happy weeds and happier crops, we break out our many tools for cultivation and get to work. A busy week ahead for all of us.

A scattering of Mountain Bounty Farm produce is making its debut in the CSA shares this week. Throughout the winter, we partner with other regional farms to help supply the bounty for our year-round vegetable CSA. Come spring, our crops are ready to be harvested and eventually the box will be exclusively Mountain Bounty Farm produce through the end of the summer. This week we have cilantro, salad turnips, red russian kale, and lettuce. A few of these crops were unprotected while we experienced some unexpected hail storms and may have more damage than usual. Don't worry, they’ll still taste the same!

We have an exciting new partnership with Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood, CA who are going to provide our Summer Fruit Share! These shares are 7# of mostly stone fruit, including peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, plums, pluots, persimmons, quince, apples. Join today for shares starting the first week of June.

As a reminder, our delivery day in Western Nevada County changes to Tuesdays starting May 17th for all shares. Pick up times and CSA sites remain the same.

Enjoy your shares this week,

CSA Newsletter Week 16/52 (April 20&21)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 16/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

There is an ideology in farming where you don't eat anything that's not in season and that you didn't grow yourself. This stems from deep pride in our work but it's also a very tough principle to follow. It has prompted me on more than one occasion to drive 25 minutes to the farm on a weekend because I need a bunch of cilantro for dinner even as I pass the grocery store on the way there.

I broke this rule this weekend and asked my Dad (who was visiting from Ohio) to purchase some english cucumbers for a special recipe. While my parents grew up with canned vegetables, they have grown to know and understand the depths of farming and the grasp it has on so many of us. So as a farmer of five years, I'd say my parents now have a pretty good connection to vegetables. My dad comes home from the store and says to me, "Grace, I'm so proud of myself for knowing what english cucumbers are!" There on the counter are sitting two perfect green zucchini. I briefly thought about pretending they were cucumbers so I wouldn't have to break the news to my Dad. Instead, I offered some insights into the difference between the two and on a seperate trip to the store, we got the cucumbers and the dish was delicious. Cucumbers are one of the things I look forward to the most about summer. I wish I could say they were in the boxes this week, but alas, a few more weeks!

The moral of this story is that this can happen to anyone. And whether you've gotten our CSA box for 10 years or 2 weeks, there might be something you don't recognize every once in a while. And this is where we come in, ask us! Need tips and tricks for storage or meal prep, we've got you! May you never mistake a cucumber for a zucchini ever again.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

CSA Newsletter Week 15/52 (April 13/14)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 15/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

As we harvested the spinach and bok choi for the CSA boxes this week, we experienced rain, strong winds, some snow and even some brief hail. We then spent the afternoon covering most of our fields with remay (fabric row cover), in hopes that our many beds of spring crops would survive the overnight lows. While this weather feels a bit like whiplash after the warm spring days of last week, we are extremely grateful for any and all rain in the forecast. Farming is all weather work and we want to express a deep appreciation for our hard working crew who powered through the elements to harvest and protect our crops. As all of these crops eventually make their way into the CSA boxes, remember that in their early lives some loving farmers covered them up and tucked them in so that we all could enjoy their bountiful harvest in the future.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Grace

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 14/52 of 2022

Dear CSA Members,

This week we welcome four new crew members to the Mountain Bounty team! These first-year farmers join us from all over the country and bring fresh energy and spirit to our crew. They have a variety of backgrounds and experiences which lead to a rich experience of mutual learning between student and teacher. Over the next several months, we'll teach them everything we know about growing food and the many aspects of care that go into what becomes your CSA share. We'll learn what aspects of work appeal to them and help guide them along their journey to becoming farmers and food system advocates. The start of the first-year farmer programs is the unofficial start of our "season" and we're so lucky to have these new farmers with us as we tackle another week of transplanting, seeding, weeding, and harvesting. Let the fun begin!

Dear Farm Members,

Rain in the foothills! What a pleasant surprise to be reminded of the rejuvenating spirit of rain in the spring. As we anticipate the next several months without rain, we are all taking a moment to appreciate the moisture nourishing our land and our souls.

For the past 11 years, we've been fortunate to partner with Sunset Ridge Fine Fruits for our Summer and Winter Fruit Share offerings. They have decided to take a step back from providing the fruit shares this season. We have been so lucky to work with them over the years and deeply appreciate all the hard work and effort they've put into providing our incredible fruit shares for our CSA members. We will really miss working with them!

We are currently exploring replacement options for high quality, regional, organic fruit share offerings. We will keep you updated as we nativate the challenges of providing this share throughout the summer. You can sign up here to get a notification when our new fruit share offering is available.

CSA Newsletter Week 12/52 (March 23/24)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 12/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Happy Spring Equinox to all! This Sunday marked one of two moments throughout the year when the sun sits directly above the equator which provides a day and night that are equal. Last week, I was weeding our spring snap peas and accidentally pulled up a plant. I noticed that the root structure was just as long as the new growth above the surface, reminding me that there is a lot happening behind the scenes. Much like the garlic that requires dark and colder temperatures to bulb in the spring, the snap peas need a strong foundation before they grow leaps and bounds above the surface. As farmers, we traditionally take the winter to re-establish our own foundation. Each spring, we spring anew with rejuvenated spirits and ambitions for another bountiful season. We have over 80 beds planted already (a record for this time of year!) so it feels like spring is already in full force. We welcome this return of warmth and light to our lives and look forward to the season ahead. Happy Spring!

Grace

Dear Farm Members,

It's that time of year again! It's time for Asparagus to make its debut in the CSA boxes. Asparagus is one of the few crops that we don't grow at Mountain Bounty Farm, so we trust our friends at Durst Organic Growers to supply the bounty each spring. If you haven't seen how asparagus grows, check out this post to see the magic (https://www.instagram.com/p/CakhlVjvI1N/). Asparagus is a perennial crop, springing to life each March and providing crunchy, delicious treats throughout the spring season. Asparagus requires daily harvest, since they can grow up to 2 inches per day. It also requires lots of land, water, and nutrients to grow, and we hope it tastes as good as all the love and care that goes into growing it!

Our early spring flower shares start this week, March 16th/17th! Please double check the delivery list to confirm that you are signed up for this share. If you'd like to join in for shares starting next week, you can sign up for flower shares here.

Enjoy your shares this week,

Asparagus is here! I can't wait to grill it, add it to pasta or top a pizza with asparagus and potatoes.

This weekend I made not one, but two, Tortilla Espanola. I made them with a potato tarte tatin top (something I picked up from watching the Great British Bake Off) and mixed shallots and green garlic into the egg mixture. It was delicious and would also withstand adding in other vegetables like rainbow chard and spring onions.

And finally, since I am always looking for new ways to enjoy Broccoli, I am going to try Broccoli Melts this week. Can't go wrong with cheese, bread and veggies!

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 10/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This week we will begin planting our first round of greenhouse grown transplants. From early spring days to mid-September, we take plants that are ready and throw them out into the world each week. These plants were started in our greenhouse in early January and after weeks of watering and watching by our propagation manager, Mike, they are ready for the next phase.

In these early spring days, we protect our plants with "remay" covering (sometimes called agribon), which makes our fields look like seas of white cap waves. These coverings give our plants some extra love and care before they have to face the elements. The remay keeps the temperatures warm and helps retain moisture in the soil. In a few short weeks, we'll remove the covering and be pleasantly surprised by the food that has grown beneath, and the occasional gopher that has taken up residence.

Our early spring flower shares start next week, March 16th/17th. A sure sign that spring is here in the foothills and that hope springs eternal. If you need a little pick me up, flower shares are beautiful ways to brighten your world. You can sign up for flower shares here.
Enjoy your shares this week,Grace

CSA Newsletter Week 9/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 9/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

For the past few years, our farmer, Kale, has graciously taken the time to write the weekly newsletter for our CSA members. I wanted to take a moment to thank Kale for writing such an eloquent newsletter each week that provided a perfect glimpse into life at Mountain Bounty Farm. Kale is an absolute rockstar on the farm and a true gift as a human. We will miss working with her every day as she transitions to working primarily with Little Boy Flowers this season.

To those new and old to the CSA, I wanted to introduce myself. This will be my fifth season as a farmer at Mountain Bounty Farm and my third year as the CSA manager. I split my time between days working in the fields and office days where I answer calls and emails from our CSA members and try to make your CSA journey as smooth as possible! If you do ever have any questions or comments about your CSA subscription, you can email me at Info@mountainbountyfarm.com or call (530)292-3776. Outside of farming, I'm an avid reader, proud dog mom, hobby potter, and founding member of the Mountain Bounty Kayak Club.

This week, we began two big projects, planting potatoes and putting up our season extension growing tunnels, often called our "caterpillar tunnels." The main challenge of these tunnels is wrangling a 280 ft by 50 ft piece of plastic on top of the tunnels and trying not to let it blow away in the wind. Wish us luck! I post a bit of the work we do here on our Instagram page, if you'd like to follow along on our visual story.

I hope you enjoy your boxes this week,

Grace Debbeler

CSA Newsletter Week 8/52 (2/23 & 2/24)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 8/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

I come to you this week with the bittersweet announcement that this will be my last newsletter!  I’ll be spending most of my days this coming season growing flowers instead of vegetables, so from here on out you’ll be in Grace’s very capable hands.

For the past four years, I’ve sat down almost every week and wondered what I could possibly say to all of you about the work that we do. To share the extent of our experience as farmers has always felt like a tall order. Mostly, I’ve noticed, it comes out small. That no matter how many onions you’ve harvested, the first onion of the year feels so special that it might as well be the first onion of all time. That a summer day can feel like an entire lifetime until you turn around and do it all over again. That on some days, the air feels golden, and the angle of the sun is just right, and you tilt your face to the sky as the sandhill cranes fly over and feel so lucky just to be in this world.

Every week, our boxes go out and I think of the hands, your hands, that lift and open them. Hands that grab vegetables and stuff them into fridges and onto kitchen counters, that twist off radish greens and wash and chop and peel and pinch.  We are all so inextricably linked to this planet and to each other. A tiny blue speck that just keeps on spinning. Thank you, as always, for the outpouring of love and support you offer to this farm and to all of us. You make everything we do worth it many times over. It’s been such an honor to be the bridge between our worlds, and I’ll miss it! Here’s hoping that this week, and every week, finds you with full hearts and full bellies. Happy eating!

CSA Newsletter Week 7/52 (2/16 & 2/17)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 7/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

This past week we irrigated our garlic crop. This is a frightening thing to do in early February with our reservoirs not yet full, no significant precipitation in the forecast, and no rain since the snowpocalypse. Our garlic, which was planted as cloves in October and saved as seed garlic from the previous year's crop, sits alongside our strawberry beds for nine long months as it transitions from clove to bulb for harvest in June. Garlic needs a certain number of "chilling hours" called vernalization, to trigger the development of a bulb in the spring. While it may feel like June with these warm, breezy days, we're thinking like garlic and staying calm and contemplative for the next few months.

As we hurtle towards spring and a bright new season, we hope you take a moment to enjoy these chilling hours, just like the garlic. Enjoy your boxes this week.

CSA Newsletter Week 6/52 (2/9 & 2/10)

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 6/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Over the last week or so, our late winter days have at long last stretched just beyond 10 hours. This bright moment of sunlight returned marks the cusp of spring, and the end of what is sometimes called the ‘persephone period’. In Greek mythology, Persephone, goddess of spring, was tricked and taken into the underworld by Hades. Her mother Demeter, goddess of the harvest, could do nothing but weep over the loss of her daughter - in the midst of her grief, all ceased to grow. And so, with the seasons held at bay and famine descending, a compromise was reached; Persephone would spend most of her year above ground, with a brief winter return to her role as queen of the underworld. Every year she emerges, and spring follows closely behind!

In winter, when the day length drops below 10 hours, plant growth slows to a crawl. Out in the fields, you can see the change come over our greens, which produce the tiniest of leaves, and then none at all. Seedlings started during this time grow much more slowly than they do during the long days close to the summer solstice, something that we must always account for in our planting schedule. It’s incredible how those short winter days can sometimes feel like the longest of all.

No matter, because short winter days are finally at an end. And with the last of this year’s persephone period behind us, we’re setting darkness aside and watching the world around us pick up speed. Hold onto your hats folks!

CSA Newsletter Week 4/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 4/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

January aside, this sunny window has had the farm bustling and full of energy. Each week we cross our fingers and hope for rain, simultaneously grasping at this glorious chance to prepare for the season ahead. Seeds to start, projects to finish, fields to mow, and hopefully enough time to do it all! It’s winter’s game - run while the sun’s still out.

Your boxes this week come to you loaded with the usual winter greens and root vegetables, along with a couple of extra-special treats! Romanesco (the lime green, fractallated type thing you’ll see in your box) is a winter favorite, with a rich, nutty flavor that lands somewhere on the spectrum between broccoli and cauliflower. It tastes incredible with parmesan and butter, tossed with crispy breadcrumbs or toasted nuts, roasted with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon - if you know, you know.

We’re wishing you all a fantastic week of sun and full bellies! Whenever rain decides to come, we’ll most definitely be ready for it.

CSA Newsletter Week 3/52

MOUNTAIN BOUNTY FARM NEWS
Week 3/52 of 2022

Dear Farm Members,

Many years ago, I worked as a nanny for a family that participated enthusiastically in a local CSA. Each week, I’d un-box their vegetables for them and place them in the fridge, proud (I was also farming at the time) that these folks were such avid vegetable eaters. This is where the spaghetti squash entered my life, one dreary week in mid-winter. There it was at the bottom of the box, a 3 lb golden egg with a woody stem that peered directly into my soul. I felt that, in theory, I loved spaghetti squash-or at least that I must uphold a pastoral responsibility to the seasonal diet it had come to represent. I gently lifted it out, and lovingly placed it on the counter, beside the fruit bowl.

It stayed there for an entire year.

A lot can happen in a year, but during this particular year, eating spaghetti squash was not one of those things. I became familiar with the sight of the spaghetti squash, a landmark, a sentinel, constant reminder of an ever prolonged sense of failure. I understood, when the spaghetti squash was eventually offered to me, just how grateful the family would be for someone else to shoulder this burden. So I took it home, fully intending to eat it and finally complete its destiny. I placed it out of the way, on a dark shelf in the pantry.

It stayed there for a year.

I’ll confess that in the end, I composted the spaghetti squash. It was the right thing to do. The cautionary tale I will now make explicit; don’t let this happen to your spaghetti squash. It’s unique, and delicious, and easier to deal with than you might think. Use a sharp knife to carefully cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, and bake it. It won’t take long at all (more details on that here), and you can even microwave it if you want! The reward is a delicious meal, and, if you’re like me, the satisfying feeling of a destiny finally fulfilled. Good luck!
