Fruit Share Update
Dear Fruit Share members,
As you know, Northern California experienced an unusually hard frost on the 19th and
20th of April. Nevada County fruit growers were almost completely wiped out, as were
thousands of other farmers throughout the region (even in the valley!). To give an
example of the intensity of this frost, in our vegetable fields we lost about 12,000 newly
transplanted broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower plants.
Through some amazing luck, Filaki farm, a wonderful certified organic orchard on a
hilltop near Oregon House (about 25 miles away from us) only lost about 20% of their
fruit. I am thrilled to report that they have agreed to make the fruit share boxes for us this
season. Last summer I noticed the high quality of their fruit at Briarpatch. Angie and I
visited their orchards and were very impressed. They have a varietal multitude of
cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, pears, and table grapes (they also have
apricots, apriums, persimmons, and pomegranates, which they lost to the frost, so we’ll
have to wait until next year…).
Filaki Farms expect a slightly longer harvest season than we had predicted: 17 weeks
instead of 15 weeks. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the extra two weeks will cost an
additional $34.66 ($38.66 for Truckee members). Please send us a check as soon as you
can.
If you wish to opt out due to this change, please let us know via email at
info@mountainbountyfarm.com or call us at 292-3776, and we will send you a refund.
The shares will start Monday, June 16 for Grass Valley and San Juan Ridge pickups and
Thursday June 19 For Nevada City and Truckee pickups. Due to the frost there will be a
gap in their harvest after the second week. The gap will be for one or two weeks and then
the boxes will resume so that you receive a total of 17 weeks of deliveries. We will notify
you via email about the particulars of the gap about a week beforehand.
FRUIT SHARE STARTS: MONDAY JUNE 16/THURSDAY JUNE 19.
PLEASE SEND ADDITIONAL CHECKS AS SOON AS YOU CAN.
Thanks for your support,
John Tecklin
