New Field, Better Soil, More Veggies!!!

March 7, 2011

In other big farm news, as we also announced last fall, we have broken ground on a large (for us) new field for which we have high hopes. It’s about 8-10 tillable acres on a 40 acre parcel owned by some real old timers. It’s been in their family since around 1900 and the 92 year old man who lives there was born there. He raised cattle for many years and also hay in more recent years. He is a really inspiring character – still out there cutting his own firewood, keeping the brush cleared and fences mended. I’ve known him for about 10 years and last fall we finally worked out an agreement to lease the farmable portions of the land.  The land is nearby, but 500 feet lower in elevation than our “home” fields off of Purdon Rd and is much warmer and also much better drained.  We should have warm season crops like tomatoes, corn, and melons much sooner than before. We will also be able to meet more of the demand for our produce.
